BUCKS COUNTY

A whale of a tale: Live whale fished out of Delaware River, displayed in Doylestown in 1815

In addition, another lesser-known chapter of Bucks County’s past highlights the strong Welsh influence in parts of Central Bucks

Bucks County’s history is filled with curious and little-known stories, including one that seems almost unbelievable: in the fall of 1815, a live whale was reportedly exhibited inside the Doylestown Hotel in the center of town.

According to Carl LaVO at the Bucks County Herald, visitors paid 25 cents for admission, with children admitted at half price, per historical accounts. How the massive sea creature was kept alive so far inland remains a mystery, as whales typically cannot survive long outside of saltwater, per the article.

The whale is believed to have strayed from its natural migratory route, possibly mistaking the Delaware River for a path toward warmer breeding waters. It traveled as far inland as Morrisville before being stopped by rapids and shoals that separated freshwater from the estuary, according to the article. There, fishermen captured the animal and eventually transported it to Doylestown for public display. What ultimately became of the whale is unknown.

Another lesser-known chapter of Bucks County’s past highlights the strong Welsh influence in parts of Central Bucks. In the early 18th century, Welsh immigrants settled in areas like New Britain and Hilltown, bringing their language and culture with them. Around 1719, Welsh — known as Cymraeg — was effectively the unofficial language spoken throughout the region.

Families such as the Griffiths, Pughs, Butlers, Merediths and Mathiases helped shape the area’s early development, with institutions like the New Britain Baptist Church standing as lasting reminders of their heritage, according to the article.
