‘Grandparent scam’ thwarted after New Britain senior trusts instincts

Police credit quick thinking, urge families to verify urgent calls

  • Public Safety

An 88-year-old New Britain Township resident avoided losing thousands of dollars to a common phone scam after pausing to question the situation and contacting police.

According to New Britain Township Police Department, the woman, identified as Gretel, received a call from someone claiming to be her grandson. The caller, whose voice sounded similar, told her he was in serious trouble and urgently needed $8,000, while insisting she not tell anyone.

Believing the situation could be real, Gretel withdrew the money from her bank. However, after reflecting on the call, she became suspicious and went to the police department to speak with an officer before taking further action.

Detective Richard Peffall recognized the scenario as a “grandparent scam,” a scheme in which fraudsters impersonate relatives and use urgency and emotion to pressure victims into sending money.

At the officer’s direction, Gretel contacted her daughter, who confirmed her grandson was safe and not in distress. Gretel then returned the money to her bank.

Police praised Gretel’s awareness and decision to seek help, noting her actions prevented a financial loss and could serve as an example for others. Officials are reminding residents — particularly seniors — to be cautious of unexpected calls requesting money, to verify claims with family members, and to contact police if something feels off.

Authorities said the case underscores a simple but critical message: slow down, ask questions and trust your instincts.
