Warrington Township Police are warning residents about a recent uptick in incidents involving juveniles banging on doors and fleeing, behavior authorities say is tied to a social media trend that is quickly escalating beyond harmless pranks.
According to police, the activity resembles the old “ding-dong ditch” prank, but has intensified in both frequency and severity. Officers said the behavior is now occurring “at all hours” and has led to multiple 911 calls, reports of property damage, and heightened concern among residents who may believe someone is attempting to break into their homes.
“This behavior appears to be tied to a social media trend in which participants record and post their actions,” police said in a public notice. “While similar to what was once known as ‘ding-dong ditch,’ this activity has escalated to 9-1-1 calls, property damage, and significant concern from homeowners.”
Authorities said they have obtained surveillance footage of individuals involved and are working to identify those responsible. Rather than immediately pursuing charges, police are urging parents to intervene.
“We are asking parents to speak with their children about the seriousness and potential consequences of this behavior before law enforcement needs to take formal action,” the department said.
Police emphasized that while some participants may view the acts as harmless or entertaining, the consequences can be significant — both legally and in terms of public safety. The incidents have created fear among residents, particularly when they occur late at night or involve repeated attempts at the same homes.
“Our goal is to keep everyone safe and prevent the situation from escalating further,” police said.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities.
