The Montgomery Bucks Rugby Football Club has officially launched its spring season, showcasing determination, resilience, and exciting early results across its men’s and youth programs.

The Montgomery Bucks men’s side opened their post-season campaign on the road against Wilkes-Barre Breakers in the first elimination round of the playoffs. Despite missing several key starters, the squad embraced the challenge with intensity. Wilkes-Barre struck early with a structured and methodical attack, building an early lead. Montgomery Bucks responded before halftime with a well-worked try fueled by strong support play from Nick Hale, Tarin Hill, and Ethan Walkowiak.

In the second half, the Breakers maintained their momentum, but Montgomery Bucks continued to battle. Tries from Zach Schulz and a second score from Man of the Match Nick Hale highlighted the team’s effort and resilience. While the final score of 61–17 didn’t meet their playoff expectations, the men’s team remains focused on growth with two additional matches scheduled this spring.

At the youth level, the U16 Griffins delivered one of the weekend’s most dramatic performances in a hard-fought victory over West Chester Wolfpack. Under the composed leadership of captains Max Potson and Zak DeCesare, the Griffins trailed 10–0 at halftime and were reduced to 14 players following an unfortunate accident.

Refusing to back down, the team mounted an inspiring second-half comeback. Man of the Match Nate Shutts led the charge with tactical kicking and powerful running, while tries from Mike Gonce and Mani Eaton put the Griffins ahead. A crucial late kick from Tony Bangert extended the lead, but the challenge was far from over. Down to 13 players, the Griffins showcased exceptional defensive resolve, forcing a decisive knock-on as time expired to secure a 15–10 victory. The club also extended its thoughts and prayers to a member of the Wolfpack community who required medical assistance following an unfortunate accident during the game.

Meanwhile, the U19 High School boys opened their regular season in dominant fashion with a 32–7 away win over divisional rivals Blackthorn Rugby. From the opening whistle, the Griffins applied relentless pressure, preventing their opponents from finding rhythm. Connor Berke led the scoring effort with two tries, while additional contributions came from Nate Schepian, Brendan Bieker, and Man of the Match Connor McMillan. McMillan delivered a standout all-around performance, excelling in defense, kick coverage, and dynamic attacking play from the fullback position. Colton Marjoram and Matt McCormick added valuable points through conversions and penalty kicks to round out the scoring.

Looking ahead, the men’s team will take a bye week, while the club’s youth sides continue their busy spring schedule. On Sunday, March 29, the U12 and U19 squads travel to face Delco Rugby Football Club, while the U14 and U16 teams head to take on Chambersburg in another set of competitive fixtures.

As the spring season gains momentum, Montgomery Bucks RFC continues to build on a proud tradition of developing athletes and fostering a love for rugby throughout the region. Serving Montgomery and Bucks Counties since 1988, the club remains committed to providing instructional and competitive rugby opportunities that strengthen character, teamwork, and community.

Players of all experience levels are encouraged to get involved, with programs available from youth flag rugby through high school and adult competition.
