Central Bucks to conduct school bus evacuation drills this week

District asks drivers to avoid buses during drills as students practice emergency exits

  • Schools

Central Bucks School District will conduct mandatory school bus evacuation drills across all schools from Monday through Friday, as part of its ongoing student safety efforts.

According to Transportation Director Christopher Robbins, the drills will take place on school property in designated safety zones and will be coordinated in advance with drivers and school staff to minimize disruption. Additional personnel will be on hand during the exercises to assist students and ensure the process runs smoothly.

The drills are designed to teach students how to safely exit a bus in an emergency situation. While past generations may remember quickly jumping from the rear door, Robbins said today’s approach emphasizes a more controlled method, with students instructed to sit, scoot, and carefully exit with support from classmates and staff. The process focuses on safety, teamwork, and preparedness.

District officials are asking for the public’s cooperation during the drills. Motorists should not approach or pass a bus while an evacuation drill is underway, and normal traffic should only resume once the bus’s rear door is fully closed. The district noted that temporary delays may occur near school campuses and bus stops during the drills.

Officials said the exercises are an important step in ensuring students are prepared to respond calmly and safely in the event of an emergency, while reinforcing confidence in daily transportation routines.
