Applications are now open for the 2026 Water and Wastewater Internship Program (WWIP), a paid summer internship offering participants an inside look at one of the region’s most essential career fields.
Now in its fifth year, the program connects participants with real-world experience in drinking water and wastewater services to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps communities safe, healthy, and running every day.
As demand grows nationwide for skilled water professionals, WWIP offers a direct pathway into careers in water and wastewater management, environmental engineering, and public utility operations. Interns will work alongside experienced operators, engineers, and laboratory staff, gaining hands-on experience in water quality testing, facility maintenance, system operations, and regulatory compliance.
“The work happening at water and wastewater facilities often goes unnoticed, but it impacts every single person in our communities,” said Shannon Drosnock, Executive Director of Montgomery Township Municipal Sewer Authority and PMAA Region 1 Director. “This internship allows students to step inside the industry, build meaningful skills, and see the long-term career opportunities available in a field that offers both stability and purpose.”
The 10-week paid program follows a biweekly rotational schedule, giving interns hands on experience at six participating authorities including Chalfont New Britain Township Sewer Authority, Montgomery Township Municipal Authority, North Penn Water Authority, North Wales Water Authority, Northampton Bucks County Municipal Authority, and Warminster Township Municipal Authority. Throughout the summer, interns gain exposure to treatment processes, field operations, laboratory work, and critical infrastructure that support the region’s water and wastewater systems.
The internship is open to high school students who are 18 or older, college students, recent graduates, and veterans interested in engineering, environmental science, or utility operations. The program runs from June through August and includes opportunities for fieldwork, mentorship, and professional networking.
Applications are now open, and interested candidates are encouraged to apply by March 27, however applications will continue to be considered until all positions are filled.
