A tractor-trailer crash on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day spilled an estimated 50 gallons of diesel fuel onto Ridge Road in Perkasie Borough, prompting a multi-agency hazmat response and an extended road closure.

Police said the tractor-trailer overturned at about 4 p.m. Monday on Ridge Road near Blooming Glen Road after the vehicle, which was carrying scrap metal, went off the roadway.

Debris spilled onto the road, and diesel fuel began leaking from the truck’s saddle tanks. Crews from Perkasie Fire Company, the Sellersville Volunteer Fire Department, and Bucks County Hazardous Materials Team responded to contain the spill.

According to Sellersville fire officials, its battalion and hazmat units used a patch kit to secure the leaking tanks while oil-dry material was spread along the roadway to absorb the fuel.

Ridge Road between Blooming Glen Road and Callowhill Street remained closed for an extended period as fire police directed traffic and crews worked into the night to clean the scene.

Police said the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection was notified, and there was no threat to the local water supply, according to CBS Philadelphia.
