Democrats officially took control of Telford Borough Council Monday, January 5 at council’s reorganization meeting.

The meeting saw the swearing in of Democratic newcomer Lauren Geitz, Democratic incumbent John Taylor and Republican incumbent Robert Sparks, yielding a 4-2 Democratic majority. Republican mayor Jerry Guretse was also sworn in. Geitz, Taylor and Guretese will serve four-year terms, while Sparks will serve a two-year term.

Democratic council member-elect John William Ralston was not sworn in after borough secretary Bryan Poster announced that Ralston relocated outside of the borough, rendering him ineligible to serve on borough council. Council is currently accepting letters of interest for the position, said Poster.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, council unanimously elected Democrat Meredith Torres and Republican Robert Sparks as council president and vice president, respectively. Torres was first elected to council in 2023, while Sparks was appointed to fill a vacancy in 2024.

Council also unanimously reappointed Kilkenny Law as borough solicitor, CKS Engineers, Inc. as the borough’s engineering firm and Bryan Poster as borough secretary and treasurer.

In addition, Poster took the opportunity to advertise some open appointed positions in the borough, including a five-year term on the Telford Borough Authority, two five-year terms on the Planning Commission, two four-year terms on the Recreation Board, a one-year term on the Vacancy Board and two three-year terms on the Zoning Hearing Board.

The application deadline is January 15 at 4 p.m. Council will hear from selected candidates and vote on the appointments at its January 19 work session.

The next Telford Borough Council meeting is on January 12 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit telfordborough.org
