Plumstead Township is moving forward with a major step in expanding its emergency services, announcing it is hiring a full-time fire chief and fire marshal as the municipality establishes its first paid career fire service to supplement existing volunteer companies.

Township officials said the new chief will help build the department from the ground up, including hiring personnel, developing policies, acquiring equipment, and creating operational readiness.

Once the daytime career crew is in place, the chief will oversee daily fire service operations, fire prevention, and long-term strategic planning. The role also includes serving as Township Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator, working with local, county, state, and federal agencies during emergencies and disasters.

The position reports to the Director of Public Safety and will coordinate closely with volunteer fire companies, township officials, and regional partners.

Responsibilities include supervising weekday firefighters, managing the department budget, overseeing training and compliance with NFPA and OSHA standards, directing equipment maintenance, leading fire inspections and public education programs, and assuming command at major incidents.

Plumstead is seeking candidates with at least 10 years of progressive fire service experience, including five years in a supervisory or command role. Required credentials include Pennsylvania Firefighter II and Fire Officer I certifications, completion of multiple Incident Command System courses, and a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Additional preferred qualifications include EMT certification and advanced fire inspection or protection credentials.

The starting salary is listed at $110,000 for applicants meeting all requirements, along with a comprehensive benefits package. Applications are being accepted until the position is filled.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and copies of relevant certifications to: ATTN: Director of Public Safety, Plumstead Township, 5186 Stump Road, Pipersville PA 18947, or submit electronic copies to [email protected] with the subject line as "Fire Chief Application."

Public Works Administrative Assistant sought

At the same time, the township is also hiring a full-time public works administrative assistant to support day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department. The role serves as the primary administrative contact for the department, handling phone calls, correspondence, and citizen concerns related to roads and infrastructure.

Duties include processing road opening permits, coordinating PennDOT correspondence, maintaining records tied to Liquid Fuels funding, grants, vehicles, equipment, and fuel use, and assisting with bid administration and purchasing documentation.

The position also involves tracking employee time and attendance, CDL compliance, PA One Call notifications, and Adopt-A-Road records, while maintaining organized filing systems and databases.

Township officials said the job requires strong organizational and communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and the ability to work independently. Prior municipal experience is preferred.

The salary range is $55,000 to $60,250, depending on experience, and includes a full benefits package.

Interested applicants should submit a completed employment application and resume to Public Works Director Alan Bleam at [email protected].

Both positions are full-time and based at township facilities along Stump Road in Pipersville.

Township officials said the hires reflect Plumstead’s continued investment in public safety infrastructure and essential municipal services.
