Big changes are coming to the local grocery landscape in Doylestown Borough, as Simply Fresh by McCaffrey’s Food Markets prepares to open a full-size store in the Mercer Square shopping center in Doylestown Township, taking over the space currently occupied by Weis Markets.

Weis is expected to close its Old Dublin Pike location in March, according to a store employee cited by the Bucks County Courier Times. The site, which first opened as a Weis in 2012 after replacing a Genuardi’s, will become a roughly 50,000-square-foot McCaffrey’s market, with a grand opening anticipated in early 2027.

The move will mark the end of McCaffrey’s Simply Fresh on State Street in the borough, the brand’s only small-format location. McCaffrey’s officials said the borough store will remain open until the new, larger market opens.

Simply Fresh has served as a walkable grocery option for nearby residents, business owners and students for nearly a decade, and its closure has drawn an emotional response from some community members, according to the Bucks County Herald.

“As we look ahead, we recognize that many of our customers will miss the convenience and familiarity of our State Street location,” James J. McCaffrey IV, executive vice president of McCaffrey’s, told the trade journal “Progressive Grocer” and reported by both outlets.

He said the company is grateful for the community’s support and described the larger store as an opportunity to offer a full-size market experience while remaining committed to serving the Doylestown area.

McCaffrey’s also operates stores in New Hope Borough, Lower Makefield and Newtown Township. The transition represents both the loss of a neighborhood-scale grocery store in the borough and the arrival of a larger regional market just outside town.
