Penn Medicine Doylestown Health is partnering with local dermatologists to offer free skin cancer screenings as part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

The screening event is scheduled for May 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cancer Institute, located at 599 W. State St., Suite 307, in Doylestown.

Registration is required and space is limited. Individuals can sign up by calling 267-885-1580.

Organizers said the program is intended for individuals who are uninsured or have high deductibles or copays, and who have not received a skin screening within the past two years.

The event is not designed for patients currently under the care of a dermatologist.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with estimates suggesting one in five Americans will develop it by age 70. Officials said routine screenings can play a critical role in early detection.

“Although skin cancer is very common, the survival rates increase dramatically when disease is caught early,” Dr. Shannon Wiedersum said in a news release. “Routine skin cancer screenings can identify pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions in their early stages and will help you learn to better examine your own skin.”
