Barn Nature Center preparing to relocate as county plans to repurpose aging building

Nonprofit caring for exotic animals seeks larger space in Central Bucks as September move looms

  • Bucks County

A longtime Bucks County animal sanctuary is preparing for a major transition as it searches for a new home.

The Bucks County Herald reports that The Barn Nature Center, a nonprofit that has operated for 14 years out of a county-owned barn near Route 611 and Almshouse Road, will need to relocate after officials announced plans to repair and repurpose the aging structure.

County leaders cited the building’s deteriorating condition, including recent fire damage, as the reason for the change, per the report.

The center has become known for housing a wide range of exotic animals — from reptiles and birds to mammals and invertebrates — many of which were surrendered by owners or rescued from unsafe conditions.

Through hands-on programs, visitors can interact with the animals while learning about their habitats and unique traits, according to the article.

Despite the challenge ahead, organization leaders described the move as an opportunity to grow. According to the article, the center is aiming to find a new facility of about 8,000 square feet in the Central Bucks area, roughly double its current space, to expand programming and improve accommodations for its more than 100 animal residents.

The nonprofit serves thousands of visitors each year through tours, camps, school visits and community programs, with a mission focused on connecting people to wildlife and the environment. College students and interns also play a role in supporting daily operations and educational efforts.

With a deadline to vacate the current site by September, staff say the relocation will require significant planning and funding, including transporting animals, rebuilding habitats and maintaining programming during the transition. The organization is now seeking community support as it works to secure a new location and continue its work.

Donate here to The Barn Nature Center to help sustain its mission of caring for animals while continuing educational programs that connect thousands of visitors each year with the natural world.

Donations directly support the well-being of more than 100 animal residents and allow the organization to expand hands-on learning experiences that promote respect for wildlife and the environment.

Contributions also help power community programs serving at-risk youth and individuals with special needs, while supporting internship opportunities for college students through partnerships with Delaware Valley University. Donations of any kind — whether supplies or financial — help ensure the center can continue its work during its upcoming relocation and beyond.
