Doylestown Borough Council opened its Sept. 15 meeting with a celebration of cycling and civic engagement, recognizing the 21st annual Bucks County Classic and welcoming a new junior council member.
Bucks County Classic honored
Council and Mayor Noni West issued a formal proclamation commending the Bucks County Classic Bike Race, which has established itself as one of the premier cycling events in the U.S. and brought international athletes and thousands of visitors to the borough earlier this month.
Officials noted that the race drew more than 12,500 spectators and featured more than 500 pro-am athletes from 18 countries and 27 states, including Olympians, national champions, a Pan-American champion and a former Tour de France rider.
A proclamation was read by West.
“The Classic not only shows the athleticism and determination of elite cyclists, but also strengthens our community spirit by including opportunities for residents, youth, families, and visitors to participate, cheer, and celebrate together in the heart of our burrow,” West said. “The Bucks County Classic contributes significantly to the vitality of Doylestown, supporting local businesses, drawing visitors to our historic streets, and enhancing our reputation as a town of culture, health, and community pride.”
Organizers, volunteers, and sponsors were thanked for their contributions. Race director and owner Laura Reppert highlighted the teamwork that makes the event possible.
“This race would not exist without your support,” Reppert said, noting that community members play roles ranging from volunteer coordination to officiating under USA Cycling rules. She added with a smile that she hopes for “better weather next year.”
New junior council person sworn in
The meeting also included the swearing-in of Thomas O’Reilly as the borough’s new junior council person. O’Reilly, accompanied by his parents, pledged to attend monthly meetings, observe council rules, and actively participate in borough business, while recognizing his non-voting status.
“You are now our junior council person,” council officials declared following the oath, as O’Reilly received applause from those in attendance.
