Central Bucks School District leaders on Thursday recognized Jamison Elementary after-school childcare staff who intervened earlier this month when a motorcyclist drove onto school grounds while children were outside playing.
On Sept. 8, about 20 students were on the playground when the rider illegally crossed a field and approached the blacktop area, according to the district.
“Two staff members moved toward the motorcycle as it reached the blacktop, forcing the driver to stop. Other staff ensured that students were moved safely inside,” the district wrote in an email to families.
“Thanks to the swift action of all involved, the motorcyclist retreated and all students remained safe. Warwick Police later identified and charged the driver.”
At Thursday’s school board meeting, Substitute Superintendent Dr. Charles Malone praised the employees who responded.
“We are honored to have several staff members here tonight who went above and beyond to help our kids,” Malone said. “Two of the staff members here tonight, Michelle Kane and Judy Shaffer, moved toward the motorcycle just as it reached the play area's blacktop, forcing the driver to stop.”
“The other staff members at the scene, including Anita Haley, who is also here tonight, made sure the students were kept from the immediate area and helped bring them inside,” he said. “Because of the swift, swift actions of all these outstanding employees, the motorcyclist went back the way he came, and all students were safe.”
The board presented certificates of commendation and Amazon gift cards to three staff members who attended the meeting: Haley, Kane, and Shaffer.
Commendations were also given to additional staff who could not attend: Chris Cool, Natalie Lucca, Connie Valimont, Cathy Wiggins, and Nancy Zartarian.
“We thank the police for their partnership and work in bringing this matter to a resolution,” Malone added.
Jamison Principal Lauren Dowd and Aftercare Coordinator Dana Hahn joined in celebrating the childcare team.
