A 19-year-old Chalfont Borough woman is accused of stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise while working at a Doylestown Borough jewelry store, according to Central Bucks Regional Police.

Zenub Umer, of the 60th block of Westview Avenue, and also of the 600 block of Vairo Boulevard in State College, was charged Aug. 22 with felony counts of retail theft and receiving stolen property, according to court records.

Police said Umer was captured on surveillance video at Sarah Cornwell Jewelry on South Main Street appearing to manipulate the store’s point-of-sale system and bag merchandise without completing payment transactions.

A store co-owner told police she reviewed interior cameras and observed thefts on Aug. 3, Aug. 9, and Aug. 16. She alleged Umer would scan items, hold her phone over the tap-to-pay terminal, then cancel out the transactions before bagging the merchandise.

The owners reported finding empty packaging in the trash on Aug. 17. The total loss was valued at $2,584.28, according to the complaint.

Police said they reviewed both surveillance footage and transaction records and found no completed purchases during the times Umer was observed on camera.

Umer waived her preliminary hearing Monday, sending the case to Bucks County Court for arraignment next month. She remains free on $5,000 unsecured bail, court records show.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
