PHILADELPHIA – Much to my delight, Jeezy was in heavy rotation Thursday afternoon, as the Eagles logged their second practice of the week ahead of Sunday’s rematch with the New York Giants.
On the injury front, Thursday’s session again revealed some notable inclusions to the status report.
No practice again for WR A.J. Brown (hamstring), though Brown was spotted working on a far field during warmups. No sign of C Cam Jurgens (knee), CB Adoree’ Jackson and OLB Azeez Ojulari once again. All three players did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Returning to practice was LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (ankle), who missed Wednesday’s practice.
Just before Thursday’s practice, the Eagles opened the 21-day practice window for WR Darius Cooper.
Cooper, a rookie from Tarleton State, made the team out of training camp as an undrafted free agent, accounting for 20 offensive snaps and another 17 on special teams over three games. The Eagles have a bit of a logjam at the position, having since added WR/RS Xavier Gipson, so it’s unclear how Cooper fits into the equation. We’ll see if he ultimately gets activated within the window. It’s worth noting the team likes Cooper’s blocking ability and physicality, using him on early push plays.
On Thursday, when the offensive line pivoted from warmups to a middle practice field, seventh-year veteran Brett Toth was first up at center. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland doesn’t typically prefer to alter multiple positions for continuity purposes, and it appears, at least for now, that Toth will get another opportunity at center. In the first meeting with the Giants, Toth was pressed into service at left guard, with Landon Dickerson sidelined with an ankle injury.
As previously noted, Eagles DBs coach Christian Parker typically spends the early portion of Thursday’s practice working with CBs Quinyon Mitchell and Adoree’ Jackson. But with Jackson sidelined, Thursday featured a tandem of Mitchell and Jakorian Bennett, the latter of whom was practicing for the second consecutive day after having his window opened Wednesday.
It should also be noted that the Eagles focus on special teams during this period, which is where Kelee Ringo is routinely stationed.
When the Eagles broke warmups, the contingent of punt returners rep on the opposite side of the same field that Parker works with two cornerbacks. Back returning were WRs Jahan Dotson, Xavier Gipson, Britian Covey and Quez Watkins, along with DB Cooper DeJean.
OLB Nolan Smith was spotted working on a far field near the end of the media-attended portion of practice. Smith, who went on injured reserve the same day as Cooper and Bennett, hasn’t had his practice window opened but is expected to return sometime next month.
OL Willie Lampkin (leg), Cam Williams (shoulder) and Myles Hinton (undisclosed) worked on a side field at the start of practice. As the session progressed, the group eventually dwindled to two, with Lampkin and Williams taking turns holding a blocking pad for one another.
