History will not be paved over to put up a gas station in Buckingham.
The 18th-century General Greene Inn, located at York and Durham roads in the township, will be saved from the wrecking ball, now that township real estate investor Robert J. Welch has purchased the parcel and its 6.5 acres, according to the Bucks County Herald.
The building once served as a tavern in 1752 and later a hotel much into the 19th century. It was operated by Henry and Mary Jamison; after Henry’s death, his widow married John Bogart in 1772 and the property became known as Bogart’s Tavern, according to the article.
The property had been for sale for $2 million, listed by owner Kevin A. Johnson, and recently was the site of an antiques shop.
Buckingham Historical Society Founder and President Christopher Valeri had tried to save the historic property for months by creating awareness of local history, via the General Greene Inn Preservation Society, according to the report.
On Facebook, Buckingham Township Supervisor Paul Calderaio called it “an incredible win” for the township.
According to the article, the inn was where, in 1776, Gen. Nathanael Greene wrote a letter to rally boats for Gen. George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River.
