Skippack floral design studio owner Alanna Messner-Scholl has created a harvest season-inspired gown made entirely from corn stalks contributed by local family-owned farms.

The project was conceived when Messner-Scholl, owner of Waverly Flower Co., was on an evening run in her hometown of Telford, said a Waverly Flower Co. press release.

“It was a gorgeous September evening during golden hour, and the cornfields were practically glowing,” said Messner-Scholl. “I was thinking about the hard work of our local farmers during the busy harvest season, and wanted to honor that visually.”

The gown was constructed using nearly every part of a corn plant, including the tassels, leaves, silks and kernels. Messner-Scholl has past experience creating floral gowns made from blooms, petals and foliages grown on the Waverly Flower Co. flower farm.

“But this one is special to me because it weaves together materials from other growers in our community,” said Messner-Scholl. “I feel lucky to live near so many family-owned farms. They are the heart and soul of this area.”

The dress will be displayed throughout October at Artwrkd, an art consortium in Newtown, Bucks County, led by Gallerist and Curator Ashara Shapiro. It is serving as the window display during a busy month of exhibitions, events, and workshops, said the release.

“Unlike past fresh floral gowns we’ve created, this one uses dried elements that can allow it to live longer than just a day or two,” said Messner-Scholl. “I’m grateful to the support of Artwrkd and looking forward to seeing it in their window display.”

Rittenhouse Farm of Telford, Frankenfield Farm Market of Souderton, Meadow Springs Farms of Quakertown and Froehlich’s Farm of Furlong all contributed materials for the project. The project was photographed by Ashley Griffin Photography, a Philadelphia-based wedding photographer, said the release.
