Mmm, what is that? Cellulose?: Corn dogs, sausage-on-a-stick recalled for wood in batter

More than 59 million pounds of frozen corn dogs and sausages-on-a-stick marketed by Hillshire Brands Co. have been recalled due to wood in the batter.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recall affects packages from March 17 to Sept. 26, 2025, and have establishment number EST-582 or P-894 on the packaging. 

The foods were sold under the Jimmy Dean and State Fair brands.

They were sold online, shipped to retail and food service locations nationwide and sold to school districts and Department of Defense locations nationwide.

According to FSIS, there were five incidents that caused injuries. An investigation found that wooden sticks got entered into the production phase before the foods were dipped in batter.

The FSIS recommended throwing away the packages or returning them at the original site of purchase.
