It’s the Sugar Plum Fairies. It’s the marching toy soldiers. And of course, an entire globe’s worth of cultural dances. It’s the holiday favorite “The Nutcracker.” Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Dance Theater (MADT), this holiday classic is returning to Bucks County just in time for Christmas.
MADT, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, recently announced the return of this beloved ballet. After a six-year hiatus, the production will return to Bucks County under the co-artistic direction of Andreas Jovovich and Priscilla Garner. The story will come to life at the Zlock Performing Arts Center at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania.
Just four appearances will take place before Christmas. Performances are slated for Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., as well as Sunday, Dec. 21 at both 1 and 6 p.m.
“A timeless holiday tradition, ‘The Nutcracker’ tells the magical story of Clara and her Nutcracker Doll, brought to life through dazzling choreography, beautiful costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score,” said the theater’s recent release. “This year’s production marks the company’s first full Nutcracker since 2019, making its return especially meaningful for both performers and audiences.”
Two full ensembles have been assembled to act, dance, and bring to life the famed story. Cast A will perform the shows on Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 21 at 6 p.m., while Team B is charged with the other two showings.
The MADT is operated under the leadership of Scott Jovovich, its president and artistic advisor, as well as Liz Fitchett Jovovich, its executive director, making the entire nonprofit a true “family affair.”
“We are beyond excited to bring The Nutcracker back to the Newtown Bucks County stage,” said Liz Fitchett Jovovich. “This production is such an incredible opportunity for our young performers to share the stage with seasoned professionals, showcasing the depth of talent and dedication within our community. To experience this level of artistry presented right here in Newtown, Bucks County is truly something special. The magic, the music, and the spirit of the season are all coming together again ~ and we can’t wait to share it.”
MADT strives to “continue to build a legacy of excellence in classical and contemporary dance.”
“Beyond its performances, the organization is deeply committed to education and community engagement,” said Liz Fitchett Jovovich via the release. “Through its outreach programs, scholarships, and partnerships, MADT works to make the art of dance accessible to everyone ~ regardless of age, background, or financial means.”
The MADT cannot continue its teachings, performances, and without the surrounding communities supporting the arts.
“Support from the community helps sustain these efforts, ensuring that MADT can continue to provide exceptional training, mentorship, and professional opportunities for the next generation of dancers,” said the release.
