Pennridge High School was temporarily evacuated Wednesday morning after four students fell ill with similar symptoms.

According to a district Facebook post, the incident began at 10 a.m. when a student reported feeling ill. Shortly thereafter, three other students in the same area of the building began exhibiting similar symptoms. School nurses then treated the students.

At 10:20 a.m., both the building and adjacent district office were evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” said the district. By 10:50 a.m., local firefighters cleared the building with no threat of a gas leak or other danger to staff and students. PSD Facilities also checked the building’s ventilation systems, and all carbon monoxide tests came back negative.

Classes resumed as normal by 11 a.m., said the district.

“The students were evaluated by our school nurse as a precaution, and their parents were notified and given the option to take their child home or to follow up with their family physician,” said the district. “We recognize that incidents of this nature can create anxiety, and we want to reassure our community that at no point were any other students in danger.”

The cause of the students’ symptoms remains unclear.

Reports that students became ill after watching an educational video involving blood and needles are unconfirmed by the district.
