Nearly 200 Pennridge North Middle School students continued their Memorial Day tradition by spending more than three hours doing community service at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery and St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Perkasie.
This tradition has been an annual event, in which North Middle School students, teachers and administrators replenish the American flags at the graves of Perkasie veterans the weekend before Memorial Day.
This year, more than 400 flags were placed on the graves of local veterans. With maps of the grounds and lists of veterans, the students helped place flags, upright memorial markers and tidied up around the headstones.
Dr. Angelo Berrios, superintendent of the Pennridge School District and a Marine veteran, joined the students and staff for the “highlight of his day.”
“I am very proud that our students are being taught the true meaning of Memorial Day—not through textbooks alone, but through action, reverence, and service,” said Berrios. “Watching the students place flags on the graves of our local veterans with care and respect was a powerful reminder that education at its best shapes both the mind and the heart.”
“As a result of this meaningful project, our students are learning the spirit behind the national holiday: to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Berrios continued. “I am grateful to the North Middle School Team for creating such a compelling learning experience that instills gratitude, patriotism, and civic responsibility.”
