From April 25 to May 25, The Foundry in Doylestown, PA, will be home to both large and small works by renowned, Philadelphia-based artist and musician Tim Motzer. This is the first art exhibit to take place in The Foundry, a beautiful and recently expanded coworking and creative space in the heart of Doylestown Borough in Bucks County, PA.
“The Foundry was built to support creative professionals—not just in their work, but in their expression. Hosting our very first gallery exhibit with an artist like Tim Motzer, whose work spans both sound and vision, feels like a perfect reflection of the space we’ve created here. This show marks the beginning of a new chapter where art, community, and collaboration converge under one roof in Doylestown," said The Foundry founder Ashley Muir.
Join us for the Opening Reception on April 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to experience Tim’s work and meet the artist and bring home some original art for your walls. Opportunities to view the work may also be made by appointment only through May 25.
Improvisations in Color (2017–2024) showcases a vibrant collection of Tim’s abstract works. Blending the spontaneity of music with the visual language of texture, color, and line, these pieces range from intimate mixed media studies to large-scale acrylic and graphite canvases. Each work is a visual echo of sound—improvised, emotive, and layered with memory, mystery, and place. Step into a space where painting meets music, and the unknown gives rise to wonder.
“My goal is to express visually what I hear in my music. As I improvise with guitar—sonic texture, atmosphere, landscape, motion, harmonic color, and line all come together to form the whole. I recognize a similar direction in my painting—collisions, accidents, and densities of color, motion, decay, dream-like states, mystery, and space. I am exploring this approach within my paintings, as one medium reflects the other. Within both, I am searching the unknown for beauty, magic, and a sense of wonder," Motzer said.
Motzer is a renowned sonic pioneer, known for his textural acoustic-electro guitar voice and genre-defying solo work, and collaborations with artists like David Sylvian, Ursula Rucker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and King Britt. With over 100 album credits and global tours, his work spans experimental music, dance, and film/TV. As an in-demand solo composer and improviser in the world of modern dance, Tim has co-created alongside master choreographers at Princeton University and for two decades at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He co-leads the improvising band PAKT, and he has run his own 1k Recordings label for more than 25 years. As a visual artist, Tim creates abstract impressionistic works, often used as album covers. His hand-painted limited CD editions merge his music and art.
