On Wednesday, the Perkasie Borough Police Department hosted its inaugural “Chief For a Day” event with students from Guth Elementary in Pennridge School District.
The students received entry tickets by engaging in good deeds in school and the community and were placed into a drawing which resulted in three chiefs and 20 sergeants being chosen as winners for this year’s event, police said in a news release Friday morning.
This year’s chiefs – Zulma Mejias, Zaria Barrett, and Celio Serrano – attended a swearing in ceremony at Perkasie Borough Hall, overseen by Mayor John Hollenbach.
Following the ceremony, the family members received a police escort with lights and sirens as they drove to school and were greeted by fellow classmates, who came out with extra enthusiasm to support their peers, police said.
To wrap up the day, officers attended two pizza party lunch sessions with the “chiefs and sergeants” to allow time for students to ask questions and get to know the officers who help to keep them safe daily.
Police said the event was a resounding success with great feedback from students, families, teachers, and the community at large.
“The Perkasie Police Department looks forward to making this a yearly tradition and continuing to find new and innovative ways to engage in community policing,” police wrote in a release. “We would like to extend a big thank you to Principal Smith, Guth Elementary staff, Mayor Hollenbach, and all our wonderful students who continue to do great things at school and in the community.”
