Tow truck scams are on the rise, with dishonest operators targeting vulnerable drivers after accidents or breakdowns, warned the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office on Monday.

These so-called "bad tows" involve predatory tow truck drivers who use high-pressure tactics to take advantage of motorists, often inflating towing fees or providing unnecessary services, according to District Attorney Jennifer M. Schorn.

While most tow truck drivers are reputable, experts warn that drivers need to stay vigilant to avoid falling victim to these schemes.

Most tow truck drivers are honest, hardworking people, but there are an increasing number who are trying to steal large sums of money from unsuspecting drivers," said Chris Sloan, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority (IFPA).

Tow truck drivers who show up unsolicited at accident scenes are one of the most common signs of fraud, according to authorities. Legitimate tow companies are typically dispatched by the police, and drivers should be cautious when approached by a tow operator who arrives without official involvement.

Often, Schorn said, these tow drivers are likely listening to police scanners and chasing crashes.

Authorities advised drivers to ask the police to call a tow truck if no officer is present at the scene. This ensures that a legitimate company is handling the tow and that drivers are not being pressured into making quick decisions.

In addition, any paperwork provided by the tow company should be closely examined. Scammers often trick victims into signing blank invoices or documents, which may result in hidden fees that weren’t initially discussed, authorities said.

The DA also recommended that drivers identify the tow. Asking for a business card or written details can help if issues arise later: Information such as the company’s address and phone number is vital in case there is a need for follow-up or a dispute over charges.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Fraud Prevention Authority offers resources on how to identify authorized tow companies and how to report suspicious activity, which can help reduce the number of these scams. Visit KnowYourTow.org for more details.
