As Independence Day approaches, Lansdale Borough Police are urging residents to celebrate safely this weekend by attending professional fireworks displays rather than attempting to light their own.

Due to strict state laws and local ordinances, very few — if any — properties in the borough legally qualify for the use of consumer fireworks, police said.

Under Pennsylvania law, consumer fireworks must not be ignited within 150 feet of an occupied structure, a condition that most properties in Lansdale Borough simply cannot meet, police said.

Additionally, fireworks may not be discharged on public or private property without permission, from vehicles or buildings, or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They are also prohibited on borough-owned streets, sidewalks, parks, and public spaces, according to law.

Contact your local municipal government agency to ask about its local fireworks laws.
