A Philadelphia woman with six previous convictions for shoplifting has been charged with assaulting a police officer who attempted to place her under arrest for alleged shoplifting at the Warrington Wegmans last month.

Shiree Chante Love, 51, of the 2200 block of Milford Street, was charged by Warrington Police with felony assault on a law enforcement officer and felony retail theft on May 21, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia for a suspected crack cocaine pipe, according to charging documents.

At 7:20 a.m. May 21, police were called to Wegmans at 1405 Main Street for a well-being check of a partially-clothed woman in a wheelchair, who was leaning on shelves in the vestibule, police said, identified as Love.

On scene, police were met by an employee who alleged that Love was leaving the store after taking numerous pieces of merchandise, totaling $47. When approached by staff members, Love became irrational, yelled, and threw produce at staff, before attempting to leave, police said.

Love was told to leave immediately, but she allegedly refused to leave.

Officers attempted to speak to Love, but she continued to try and leave while shouting and cursing, police said. During the encounter, she allegedly threw trash across the parking lot. Police stopped her, but she allegedly hit an officer’s hands when trying to keep her from leaving.

Love then allegedly spit in one officer’s face. She allegedly resisted arrest by tucking her arms into her side.

Police eventually took Love into custody, where Wegmans merchandise and a broken crack pipe were allegedly found on her.

Love has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Stacy Wertman. She is jailed on 10% of $50,000 cash bail, according to court records.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
