In accordance with provisions of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, North Penn Water Authority released its 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report.

The Authority releases this report each year to give customers a snapshot of last year’s water quality. Included are details about where customers’ water comes from, what it contains and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection state standards.

This report contains important information about the quality of our customers’ drinking water, which meets or exceeds all primary State and Federal Safe Drinking Water Act Standards.

North Penn Water Authority’s 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report was distributed by mail or other direct delivery methods to all rate-paying customers the week of May 12, and will be available at municipal offices and public libraries in the North Penn Water Authority service area.

The report can also be found on the Authority’s website at npwa.org or a copy can be obtained by calling the Public Relations Coordinator at the Authority’s office at (215) 855-3617.

North Penn Now provided an essential breakdown of the report:

Surface Water Fully Replaces Wells

In a major shift to ensure the highest quality supply, NPWA reports that 100% of its water now comes from surface water sources, primarily the Forest Park Water Treatment Plant.

This decision follows heightened concerns over PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) — a group of synthetic chemicals increasingly regulated by the EPA and PA DEP. Groundwater wells, more susceptible to PFAS contamination, were phased out entirely in 2024 to maintain strict compliance with new safety thresholds.

Exceptional Monitoring and Testing Performance

NPWA continues its tradition of excellence in testing and monitoring:

  • No violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) were reported.
  • The authority earned a Certificate of Excellence for achieving 100% acceptable data in critical testing categories such as coliform, inorganics, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and total trihalomethanes (THMs).
  • Regular staff training ensures that best practices in sample collection and ethics are maintained across departments.
  • Participation in the EPA 334 chlorine residual quality control program ensures accurate disinfection levels throughout the system.

Investing in Lab and Testing Technology

The report shows investment in state-of-the-art lab equipment, including:

  • Ion chromatography (IC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for enhanced contaminant detection.
  • Upgrades to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to streamline data analysis and reporting.

National-Level Optimization and Compliance

NPWA’s involvement in the American Water Works Association’s Distribution System Optimization Program (DSOP) further bolsters its monitoring efforts by tracking disinfection byproducts and residuals in real time. The utility remains ahead of regulatory changes, complying with updated standards for:

  • The Revised Total Coliform Rule
  • Lead and Copper Rule improvements
  • Disinfection Residual Rule
  • Emerging PFAS regulations
