An Upper Gwynedd Township woman is facing felony charges after allegedly attempting to gain access to a bank account holding more than $1 million by presenting a fake family relationship and using fraudulent identification during an incident in New Britain Township.

Maryanne Mcalary, 24, of the 100 block of White Oak Road, was charged July 14 with felony attempted forgery and felony conspiracy to commit forgery, according to charging documents.

According to the criminal complaint filed by New Britain Township Police, officers responded at 2:22 p.m. Monday, July 14 to the Citizens Bank branch located inside the Giant food store at 4275 County Line Road for a report of fraud in progress.

While en route, dispatchers advised that a man and woman were allegedly attempting to fraudulently add an individual to a bank account.

Upon arrival, police located both suspects — identified as Mcalary and co-defendant Jajuan Jones — inside an office at the bank. The branch manager told officers that Jones had presented a fraudulent Massachusetts ID bearing the personal information of an actual bank customer in an attempt to link that customer’s account to Mcalary’s account, according to the complaint.

Mcalary reportedly introduced Jones to bank staff as her grandfather. According to police, she intended to use the fake identity to merge the accounts, which would have given her access to the victim’s funds.

Bank staff advised that the victim’s account contained more than $1 million in cash.

Mcalary is free on $75,000 unsecured bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 5 before Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
