2024 Eagles ranked as one of CBS' top 10 modern NFL teams

The 2024 Eagles will be remembered for a lot of things. 

Of course, capturing the franchise's second Super Bowl is the highlight, but the group will also be hailed for their dominance. They breezed by the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card before surviving a Divisional Round scare in the snow against the Los Angeles Rams (though the Eagles led by 13 with less than five minutes remaining). A bludgeoning of the Washington Commanders followed in the NFC Championship game before an even more lopsided performance ensued during the Eagles' Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs. 

In four games, the Eagles proved that they were the best team in the NFL. They outscored their opponents 145-77, and outside of the Rams' last-minute drive, were in complete control of every game. 

It raises the question, where does this Eagles team stack up against some of the best of all-time? Well, Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports seems to think pretty highly of the reigning Super Bowl Champions. DeArdo ranked the 2024 Eagles as the ninth-best team of the NFL's modern era. 

DeArdo's criteria for the full list included overall record, Hall of Fame representation, coaching, quality of opponents and offensive/defensive standings. 

The Eagles came in ahead of teams like the 1986 New York Giants, 1966 Packers and 2016 New England Patriots. Just ahead of them are the 2007 Patriots and 1998 Denver Broncos. The top three teams also consist of the 1985 Chicago Bears, 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 1972 Miami Dolphins. 

Here's what DeArdo said about the Eagles:

"You know what makes the '24 Eagles' Super Bowl run even more impressive than the stats provided above? The Eagles could have outscored their playoff foes by an even wider margin had the situations called for it," DeArdo wrote. "Philadelphia called off the dogs early in the NFC Title game as well as in the Super Bowl. They had a 40-6 lead over the two-time defending champion Chiefs with 8:06 left in Super Bowl LIX. Had the Eagles kept their foot on the gas pedal, it's conceivable that they could have challenged the 1989 49ers record for the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history. 

"Speaking of history, the Eagles received an all-time season from Saquon Barkley, who broke Terrell Davis' 26-year-old record for the most total rushing yards in a season. The Eagles also had an elite quarterback in Jalen Hurts, an impressive receiving duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the NFL's best offensive line and a defense that had utterly dominated Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs offense on pro football's biggest stage."

The 2017 Eagles, who won Super Bowl LII, did not make the list. If you compare them to the 2024 team, it's clear the most recent champion has the advantage. 2017 will always be remembered for bringing Philly its first Super Bowl, but the talent pales in comparison to 2024. The 2017 team brought relief to the city, while 2024 cemented them as one of the NFL's elite franchises. 

It's pretty clear that last year was the best Eagles team of all-time. The early 2000's teams were consistently at the top of the NFL, but usually fell short in the postseason and never captured a championship. Teams are remembered for championships, and that's why the 2024 Eagles will always be iconic. 

It's also worth noting CBS' ranking has the Eagles as the second-best team since 2000 and best since 2010. It's hard to compare teams from different eras because the game has evolved so much over time. There's no true way to see who the best team of all-time is. 

Saquon Barkley has said he believes the Eagles are a top-five team ever.  He might have an argument, but it's all subjective.  

However, no matter what ranking system you use, the 2024 Eagles will go down as one of the best of all-time.
