As the temperatures get colder, the opportunity for thieves to steal a puffer gets hotter.
A “puffer,” according to police, is a car that is left running, unlocked and unattended.
Law enforcement authorities in Bucks County said the puff of an exhaust pipe is a smoke signal to a thief.
Police recommended that drivers start their car with a remote starter that requires the car to be locked. Second, drivers should approach their car with caution, scanning the area and walking quickly, in case someone is eyeing your return.
Police also recommended to avoid sitting in the car and texting, but rather get moving.
Furthermore, police suggested not leaving vehicles puffing at a convenience store, as cars become quick and easy targets at such businesses.
Newer vehicle models are desirable for joy rides or for organized theft rings to transport to other areas or overseas.
Older models are very valuable for the parts, police said – the car is probably worth more chopped to pieces than intact.
