The Pennridge School Board Monday, Jan. 27 approved a new Education Career Academy program, which will offer real-world experience in the education field for interested juniors and seniors.
The program is a 90-hour elective credit that will consist of classroom observations, job shadowing and lesson delivery at the district’s elementary or middle schools. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from all education centers.
Students must have a minimum of a 2.8 GPA to apply. Each student who completes the course, in addition to their post-secondary teaching certificate, will be guaranteed an employment interview with the Pennridge School District.
The program was developed by student Chloe Kircher in collaboration with high school teacher and career pathway coordinator Christopher Dyer as part of the district’s career pathways program, which provides course offerings and service learning options to meet students’ individual career goals.
Board reports
In his report, school board President Ron Wurz took the opportunity to highlight learning walks, in which the superintendent and school board members visit district schools to gain insight into new educational strategies that are driving student success. One such strategy was small group instruction for struggling students, said Wurz.
He also reported on the district’s recent QPR training, which helps individuals understand and recognize a mental health crisis, and announced that a bullying prevention seminar will be held on February 26 at 6 p.m.
Student liaison Isabella Clemens touched on some recent district events, including Keystone testing and the beginning of winter sports. She also announced that the district will reschedule the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event, an annual non-profit donation drive that was postponed due to inclement weather. She also noted the success of block scheduling, which was implemented by the board at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.
New assistant superintendent
The board appointed Dr. Bradley Palmer as the district’s new assistant superintendent. Palmer will replace retiring Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kathy Scheid.
The board also approved the 2025-2026 district calendar, with the school year beginning on August 25 and ending on June 9.
