Hilltown Township supervisors approved the hiring of a new police officer and took steps to expand accountability with local fire companies during their Aug. 25 public meeting.

Officer Isaac Fries, a graduate of the Delaware County Police Academy, was sworn in by Magisterial District Judge Regina Armitage. Fries previously worked for the Macungie Police Department and will replace a Hilltown officer who retired earlier this year. Police Chief Christopher Engelhart said Fries was selected after a thorough search for the right candidate, according to the Bucks County Herald.

Supervisors also amended a township ordinance to require fire companies that receive municipal funding to submit annual reports detailing how the money is spent. Township Manager Deanna Ferry said the change will give officials a clearer picture of the departments’ financial needs.

Ferry noted that quarterly meetings between township officials and fire leaders have improved communication. That collaboration recently included support for a county project to renovate a firefighter training facility in Warrington. With the site currently closed, Upper Bucks crews must travel to Croydon for training. Ferry said the township also is exploring the possibility of using vacant local properties for fire training, pending legal review.
