A female inmate attempted to escape from a vehicle transporting her from Doylestown Hospital to the Bucks County jail earlier this month and now faces felony charges of escape and flight to avoid trial in Common Pleas court next month.
Natalya Wilson, 26, was charged Sept. 4 by Bucks County Department of Corrections with additional misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and evading arrest or detention on foot, per court records.
However, the resisting arrest charge was dismissed, while others were held for county court, at a preliminary hearing Monday before Magisterial District Judge Mark D. Douple.
On Aug. 28, at 2:20 p.m., authorities said in an affidavit that two corrections officers were assigned to hospital watch for Wilson and were taking her from the emergency room back to Bucks County Correctional Facility.
While stopped at the red light on Route 611 southbound at Edison Furlong Road, Wilson escaped custody from the driver’s side rear of the transport vehicle, police said. Wilson was able to run a short distance, before being taken back into custody and placed back into the vehicle, per the complaint.
Wilson was returned to the jail without further incident and without injuries, police said.
Both corrections officers told the DOC they heard the sound of metal clinking while stopped for the signal at Route 611 and Edison Furlong Road, per the affidavit. They both saw Wilson exit the back of the car and run around the back of the vehicle, police said. She headed toward a parking lot, but she fell to the ground after tripping on her leg shackles, police said.
On Aug. 29, authorities interviewed Wilson, who, after signing acknowledgement of her Miranda rights, said, “I f---ed up,” per the affidavit.
Police said Wilson did not want the officers to get into trouble because they treated her well.
Wilson told police that when the transport vehicle came to a stop, she slipped both hands out of her handcuffs and pressed the window button and the window went down, police said. With her hands free from the cuffs, she got out the window and ran a short distance, before tripping over leg shackles, per the report.
Wilson, police allege, did not have a plan, but just wanted to get out of the car.
Magisterial District Judge Mark D. Douple set bail at 10% of $25,000 cash at arraignment. A formal arraignment in county court is set for Oct. 18 at noon, per court records.
According to Bucks County court records, Wilson was jailed Aug. 25 on 10% of $20,000 cash bail, stemming from an arrest and arraignment on felony theft charges out of Bensalem Township. She has a formal arraignment in Common Pleas court scheduled for Oct. 4 on those charges.
