Real progress toward Scranton-to-NYC rail revival

  • Nation

This is finally going somewhere.

The push to reinstate Amtrak service between Scranton and New York City has received a $9 million federal construction grant -- pushing the total funding to over $20 million.

This money is not study money,” said Larry Malski, the president of the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority.

The railways between the Electric City and the Big Apple need to be restored so trains can reach the 80 MPH speed necessary. Three bridges along the route also must be rehabilitated. This funding will go toward fixing the first bridge. Officials said rail service should be up and running by 2029.

Future steps in the project include identifying station stops along the route, train schedules and more.
