By the third quarter of 2025, Central Bucks Regional Police Department, which serves Chalfont, New Britain, and Doylestown boroughs, will have a new K9 team on the streets.
K9 Granite, a Belgian Malinois, is the third police service dog at the department, police said. His handler is Officer Kyle Maloney.
The expansion of the K9 Unit was made possible by a generous donation from the Thompson Organization, police said, who has purchased three service dogs from the department's K9 Unit.
K9 Granite is a dual-purpose police service dog specializing in narcotics detection and patrol/protection, which includes tracking skills, building/article searches, evidence recovery and criminal apprehension.
At present, Granite and Maloney are going through extensive training at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center in Philadelphia.
“We are deeply appreciative to the Thompson Organization for their continued commitment to the safety and security of the communities we serve. The addition of a third K9 team will increase the capability and coverage of our existing K9 Unit and contribute to its ongoing success,” said Chief Karl E. Knott.
