Plumstead Township Police recently partnered with the Central Bucks School District and BusPatrol to help make students and streets safer.
Founded in 2017, BusPatrol partners with school districts, law enforcement agencies, and municipalities to deter illegal and dangerous passes of stopped school buses.
School buses use flashing red lights, stop arms and flashing “stop signs” as safety measures to indicate that children are boarding or exiting the bus. The red lights signal to other drivers that they must stop to allow students to safely cross the road.
Buses equipped with video cameras, which activate in coordination with the red flashing lights and stop arms are now in operation.
Any potential violations are recorded and examined by BusPatrol technicians and confirmed by police.
The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code indicates the following:
The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking any school bus stopped on a highway or trafficway shall stop at least ten feet before reaching the school bus when the red signal lights on the school bus are flashing and the side stop signal arms are activated under section 4552(b.1) (relating to general requirements for school buses). The driver shall not proceed until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated. In no event shall a driver of a vehicle resume motion of the vehicle until the school children who may have alighted from the school bus have reached a place of safety. The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection at which a school bus is stopped shall stop his vehicle at that intersection until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated. If there are no physical barriers between lanes, vehicles must stop - ‘
“Even on Routte 611, where there is a center turn lane – Please stop for our students,” police said.
