The East Rockhill Board of Supervisors Tuesday, Dec. 17 discussed a series of improvements to the recently-opened roundabout at the intersection of Park Avenue and Bethlehem Pike.

The improvements were made following multiple accidents at the roundabout within a week of its opening on September 19, including one in which a motorist drove over the roundabout and through a residential fence, crashing into a tree.

Some of the highlights include new streetlights, 15 mph speed limit signs at all four entrances and flashing lights and reflectors. Township engineer Steve Baluh touched on some additional odds and ends, such as reflective strips and other signage materials.

The roundabout was constructed to ease traffic speeds and improve safety. Board chairman Dave Nyman contended that the roundabout has successfully reduced speeding on Park Avenue, while police Chief Paul Dickinson noted the absence of any accidents following the improvements. Baluh added that roundabouts cannot eliminate accidents but can reduce their frequency and severity.

Greenjackets park lease

The board reauthorized the Pennridge Greenjackets’ lease of the Willard H. Markey Centennial Park football fields from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2029. The lease includes the installation of new LED lights on the practice football field as well as security cameras on the poles.

Nyman proposed a provision requiring the lights to be turned off by 10 p.m. Township manager Marianne Morano suggested adding the provision to the organization’s annual park use permit application.

The board also authorized a maximum $1,750,000 General Obligation Note for a new public works building at 1622 N. Ridge Road. The ordinance includes an interest rate of 4.27% for five years, followed by a rate adjusted annually to a fixed, tax exempt rate equal to 70% of the Wall Street Journal Prime Rate, subject to a maximum rate of 6.0%.

The next East Rockhill Board of Supervisors meeting is on January 28 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit eastrockhilltownship.org.
